Tumbled Shungite

98% of Shungite is made up of carbon. It is found only in Lake Onega, in Karelia, that is, in the northwestern part of Russia, in the republic of Karelia, where it was born about 2 billion years ago. Today it is named in honor of the village where it was discovered, Shunga. In appearance, this stone looks very much like coal but fullerenes are found inside. Fullerenes allowed some researchers to obtain the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996.
Fullerenes are made up of 60 carbon atoms, which recreate an empty cage. They occur in nature in minimal quantities and, it is not at all clear why Shungite contains them. To date, it is the only known mineral that sees them present in its chemical composition.
