Bhumisparsa, the most widespread mudra, represents the Buddha in a sitting position with his left hand leaning on his lap and his right hand touching the ground. This position of hands symbolizes an important episode of the legendary Buddha's life when the ascetic sat in meditation under a Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya in India and refused to move to reach enlightenment. While Mara, the equivalent of Buddhist Satan, was tempted by women and parties, Buddha touched the earth, asking the nature to support her determination and help her withstand. Immediately he came to the lighting.
